Mad River Youth Soccer League
D3 and D4 - Developmental and Recreational Soccer
Division 4 (D4)
D4 or recreational soccer broadens the base of our soccer program. It is soccer for fun, exercise and to participate in a team sport. All kids play 50% and coaches are sometimes first year coaches and parents. There are 9 games per season and teams compete against Fortuna and Eureka leagues. Tournaments are optional.

Division 3 (D3)
D3 or developmental soccer is more competitive than recreational soccer, but the emphasis is on player development and specifically skill development over game outcome. More like a “local all-star” level. The goal of player development is to teach the finer aspects of the game in preparation of the youth athlete to have the option to pursue competitive soccer or High School Soccer. There are 12 games per season.

Our Club MAD RIVER UNITED strives to host a full program of developmental level teams from U10 to U18 boys and girls. Teams are formed by way of tryouts, which are held in March. Not everyone will make a D3 team there are players who remain in D4 or are encouraged to take the D1 track. We encourage life-long fitness goals.

How does MRYSL decide D3 or D4? All players are invited to tryout for the age appropriate level. Not everyone who tries will make the D3 team. The selection committee use criteria such as: quality of players at tryouts, coach evaluations and comments, quantity of players seeking more competitive play, commitment, and availability of a qualified coach. The objective evaluators and coaches try to balance skill levels on these teams, per CYSA rules.

Coaching Staff
The league offers workshops and classes to educate and evaluate our staff. We request all of our D4 coaches to obtain a coaching license and require all coaches at D3 and D1 level to attend 18 hours continuing education. Monthly meetings and mentoring are also required. Coaches are compensated based on their education and experience. Coaches may choose to designate all or some of their fee to the scholarship fund.

Our 2006 Division 3 Coaching Staff will be introduced at the tryouts on March 19.

Is there a lot of travel out-of-town? Many families enjoy traveling. Our teams do more than just play soccer and work hard. Players and their families car -pool to games and share hotel rooms. This is fun and reduces expenses. Meals can be a great time for team building and laughter.

At D4 teams play throughout Humboldt County. At D3 there are an equal number of home and away games. It just depends on what teams are in your flight. Typically, “away” travel runs south to Ukiah or Santa Rosa and also includes teams from Fortuna and Eureka leagues. Teams decide by consensus how many tournaments they want to attend.

How much does all this cost? All D3 and D1 teams have to produce a seasonal budget. In addition to slightly higher registration fees, there are tournament fees, coaching fees, and other expenses that are considered “normal.” For an estimate of fees, see page 2. D3 seasons typically run five months of the year.

Who pays all this money? I am a single parent on a tight budget! All fees can be offset by fund raising activities and sponsorships. The vision of the Mad River Youth Soccer League is that all players, regardless of income, will be able to play at the highest level of their ability. Please do not let fees, prevent your child from participating at this level. Contact a Board Member to discuss how we can help accommodate your needs. We offer a new scholarship program for those in need. See separate scholarship and sponsorship forms for more information.

Almost all our D3 teams are offered extensive fundraising opportunities. MRYSL hosts the Redwood Classic Tournament in August and a new Zombie Fest for boys in October. Teams, players, and families work to offset fees. D3 Coaching fees are $25 per month – see more information below. Each team will come up with its own plan for revenue.

If I pay, will my child be assured of playing time? D3 GUIDELINES (not mandates) are in place for playing time. Coaches must follow these guidelines, but they are not “obliged” to play everyone equally. Criteria that coaches look at include fitness, injury and discipline.

When is the season? The playing season is the same at D3 and D4 levels running September-November. Tournament play starts mid-summer. Practice begins in late spring or early summer for D3. Alternates are encouraged to practice with the team until the D4 season begins and they are released in mid-August for D4 play. Jamboree games for D4 teams will be the last weekend in August. Team photos for all levels can be arranged to be taken at the Jamboree.

Schedules and Selection. If you expect to have scheduling conflicts with other sports, be sure and notify the coach …many D3 coaches expect that soccer should be a top priority!!

All players who want to play Division 3 must tryout. The more tryout dates you attend the better chance to show your commitment, which is a factor in player selection. We try to offer flexibility in unusual circumstances.

All players who tryout will be notified when team selection is complete. Players, who do not wish to play D3, do not tryout or do not make a team will automatically be placed on a D4 team in July and begin practice in August.

Move-up policy. Our tryouts are designed to identify players who qualify to move-up. Requests must be made in writing prior to the end of tryouts and go before the Board of Directors. All players must tryout in the age appropriate bracket, if offered and in the desired age bracket. See entire move-up policy for additional details.
