THEME: BASIC DRIBBLING
(enough material here for two 75 minute sessions)
- Preliminary Activity (15 minutes): pick a
dribble tag game from the list (see also Cricket u-8 games section on the mrysl curriculum pyramid icon)
(Sharks and Minnows, Red Light green Light…Who’s Afraid? Etc)
- Stretch
- Scatter Dribble Format/intro to technique (5 mins)
- touch top of ball with sole of foot, alternate feet
- roll ball back and forth with sole of foot, alternate feet
- roll ball forward as you walk
- roll ball backwards as you walk
- walk on the spot and touch top of ball with sole of foot alternating feet
- walk and touch top of ball with sole of foot in a clockwise manner
- walk and touch top of ball with sole of foot in a counter clockwise manner
Coaching tips: emphasize the SOUND of quick, light toca-toca touches on the
ball. Emphasize making contact with the centre (equator) of the ball. Bad
habits learned here can last a lifetime…be persistent in these building
blocks.
Technique Activity: Dribbling Skills (10 minutes) Scatter Dribble Format
- dribble around grid keeping ball close to body, dribble into open space, head up
- use command “stop” by placing sole of foot on top of ball, use command
“change” to leave your ball to run to another player’s ball and start
dribbling again
“Demo and practice the Move of the Day” such as “Inside-inside-out”- with a
change of speeeeeeeeed..!”
Game Related Activity:; 1 vs. 1 against passive (walking) DF. 1 vs. 1 to
a line…..now permit the DF to jog….now try 75% DF…..”
a) Soccer Game (15 minutes)
1 vs. 1 Tournament (also a great activity to
focus on “1st defender’ techniques…but not today!)
b) Soccer Game (15 minutes) Play 2 v 2 or 3 v 3 mini games
(indoor play): divide area in half and play 2 games going across the gym; use
hockey nets, benches turned on their sides and/or cones for goals
(outdoor play): use a 20 x 20 area
