Soccer Practice #11-12
7-10 year olds
|
THEME:
Power Shooting
- Preliminary Activity (15 minutes): pick a dribble tag game from the list (see
also Cricket u-8 games section on the mrysl curriculum pyramid icon)
- Stretches; Extra emphasis on Quads-Hip Flexors (“Shooting Muscles”) and ankle
rotations…leading to a downward pointing ankle “stretch”. This is the famous
“Lace” position, and players need to prepare themselves for the difficult task
of LOCKING their ankles in this strange position throughout the kick,
- Technical Work: three to a group. One in central (cone) goal, two shooting from
opposite sides at a cone distance of at least 15 metres. Shooter (A) shoots at
Goalie (C) while B waits “behind goal” to retrieve. Now (B) will shoot back the
OTHER way toward goal…rotate every 3 minutes.
Coaching Tip: this is really a time to identify critical beginner errors and
start to rectify them in a POSITIVE environment. This can be a very frustrating
exercise for young players who get discouraged by their apparent lack of “BOOM!”
Common Errors:
The most common one is not locking the ankle, causing the toe
area to get UNDER the ball. Which in turn sets up a “wimpy” contact and a
“backspin” effect (or) lifted ball. It is highly recommended that this skill be
taught first with BARE FEET, using a highly controlled sequence of progressive
drills (that are covered comprehensively in MRYSL Coach Workshops)
Modified Game (12 player example)
“The World Famous Shooting Game”
Field: 30 metres long by 30 m wide, with a half-line of cones at 15 metres
Three goals are created on each goal-line (6m goal width = 18m)
On each team, three are designated “SHOOTERS” while the other 3 are “GOALIES”.
Coach tosses in a ball…free play and shooting EXCEPT that a goal can only be
scored (a) from behind the 15 m half-line and (b) must be below waist height (to
encourage correct technique!!)
Closure (see template)
