Soccer Practice #14-15-16
7-10 year olds
SECOND ATTACKER THEMES: Based on 2v1 and 2v2
  1. Preliminary Activity: Dribble Tag/Dribble Games (10 minutes)

  2. Stretches: Introduce Theme of working in 3’s…stretch in threes…

  3. Technique Activity (10 minutes):
    2 vs 1 in a 20 by 20 grid
(This is a VERY big space for success)
Rotate the DF every 3 minutes to allow players to develop “chemistry”. Attacking Unit (2 players) Always gets the possession on an out-of-bounds.

Coaching Tip: It is a mistake to emphasize the pass excessively: Option 1 is dribble. Option 2 is dribble and Pass at last moment (leading in to potential for a give-go) Option 3 is be creative!

There will be a high “failure rate” and Coach must resist the temptation to criticize-when you take a risk on offence, by definition you will fail often…it’s ok Look for quick direct “aggressive” attacking. Emphasize getting (ball) and (player) or (both) in the SPACE BEHIND the DFF

  4. 3 vs. 3 Games with a Twist: (20 mins)
Field is 30 by 15 with a large goal at each end. Each team will get to “attack” in turn in a 2 vs. 1 (thus the opposing team has one GK, one DF and one “resting” player behind their goal) Once ball is dead, allow other team to attack 2 vs. 1 in same way. Gradually cut down on the “down time” between episodes. Use spare balls as ammo to immediately send in a new ball…forcing BOTH teams to react as in a turnover from OF-DF-OF. Confusing at first, but they will get it, and keep it always as a 2 v 1 situation.

Coaching tip: you should be able to keep your “coaching” to 3 or 9 words: Good SPEED RISK SPACE BEHIND DRIBBLE THROUGH BALL Good !!

  5. Games: 2 vs. 2 or 3 vs. 3 Mini-Tourney (20 or 30 mins).

Coaching tip: Give 3 points for a goal (to encourage attacking play) and one point for any shot taken. Avoid ANY statement that begins with “You could have-should have-would have-…” (see “high failure rate” above)
