Soccer Practice #17
7-10 year olds
THEME: Crossing/Wing Play
Prerequisites: Techniques on (1st attacker)Dribble Moves (inside-out etc) and Power shooting (lace kicks) must be well established through lessons/review (see prior) before attempting this “Functional Training for Wingers” practice. A player should have established 2 or 3 “moves” and the ability to demonstrate correct “Power Shooting” technique before completing this lesson.
  1. Preliminary Activity: Review of dibbling techniques or a Cat-mouse game. Stress importance of retaining ball on “dominant” foot…for example inside-out move is better than inside cut….. Review 1 vs. 1 shadow work…

  2. Stretches.

  3. Technical Work: Crossing Drills
Split team into 2 groups (to shorten lines). One group will work on driving down the wing and “turning the corner” to make a (backward path) cross.

Coaching Tips: the skill of “addressing the ball” to align body and “pull” the ball across the face of the goal is a difficult one. Coach must RESEARCH this concept and be clear.

    Common Faults:
    • Player cuts ball onto non-dominant foot, and is forced to attempt a cross with the “weaker” foot.
    • Player does not “attack’ end-line (i.e. cross made too early).
    • Player lacks basic locked-ankle lace kick (see prior lessons).
    • Player kicks ball out of bounds or right to goalie. This is corrected in learning to “turn the corner” and in aiming to kick the FARTHEST edge of the ball (i.e. NOT the centre of ball!!)

Technique Work: Suggested Progression Unopposed cross from wing (10 reps each player)(70-80% success rate) Dribble a passive DF or cone, then cross (10 reps) Dribble past a 50% active DF, then cross (10 reps at 30-50% success rate) Full 1vs 1 (success rate may be as low as 25%) Progress to “receiving” a pass on wing, then dribbling>crossing.

  4. Modified Game. 3 vs. 3 with 2 Neutral Wing Players.
These 2 wings play “out of bounds” on the sides. No other players may go out of bounds into “wing” territory, Both teams may use their Wings at any time. Winger will always drive to the appropriate end-line and cross. Remember: the Neutral wings are playing ONLY with whichever team has possession.  Thus they will run/play in both directions “North and South”.

  5. Scrimmage: 5 v 5 No Special restrictions.

Coaching Tip: When you move into the scrimmage, at first the lack of WIDTH (i.e. reverting to bunching in the middle) will be frustrating. Do NOT overcoach/criticize at this point. Staying wide is more of a U-12 concept.

  6. Closure. Compliments for the best wingers of the day? The best leftie cross? Maybe a good time for a BRIEF!! chalk-talk on “positions” and/or “wide players”.
