Soccer Practice #18
7-10 year olds
Review of Prior Lessons: 1st attacker (OF dribbling)

Coaching Tip: In Soccer it is better to do a few things and do them well, than to try and rush through all 24 lessons. The concept of overlearning (coming back briefly to previously "learned" skills and concepts) is ESSENTIAL. Sports research also suggests that learning a NEW SKILL is best accomplished over short bursts in multiple practices/weeks. Dribbling (First attacker review)
  1. Preliminary Activity: Cat and mice (Who's afraid?) Game

  2. Stretches:

  3. Technique: Review the 4 Touch-touch exercises (one player-one ball-no defence)

Coaching Tip: these 5 "classic" exercises are demonstrated frequently in MRYSL clinics. They are:
    (i) out-in-out-in
    (ii) out-sole-out-sole
    (iii) step-over-touch-step over
    (iv) out-cut-out-cut
    (v) is using combination clusters of mix-and match in "series" of 2 or 3 touches.

  4. Advanced Technical: 1 vs. 1 against a retreating "shadow" Defender who is "reviewing" their basic DF Footwork from prior lessons. Use dribble-touch combinations of players’ own creation…add in stutters and speed change fakes for more advanced players. DF is NOT expected to try and win the ball (yet!). It is a "basketball style" shadow exercise.

  5. Game Play:
    (a) 1 vs. 1 Tourney

    (b) 3 vs. 3 Scrimmages: award a bonus Goal for assertive/technical dribbling (i.e. put a move on someone and receive a bonus GOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL!!)

Coaching Tip: sometimes it can be effective to INSIST on each player taking FIVE OR MORE touches before they may pass/shoot. This rule modification "forces" players to work on ball mastery rather than just "kick it away".

  6. Closure: Discuss with team when dribbling is "foolish" or "selfish" compared to when dribbling is the BEST CHOICE. Ask (don't tell) your players the leading questions. Listen respectfully and carefully to what they are telling you (from their world!).
