REVIEW: 2nd Attacker (2 vs. 1)
- Preliminary
Activity: Cat-Mouse (Who’s Afraid?)
(Assertive dribbling game!)
- Stretches.
- Technical Work: In pairs. Unopposed Wall Passes: One player is “fixed” while the
other starts 10yds away at 45* angle, dribbles and then passes to receive the
classic give-go.
Coaching Tip: Since both ANGLE (45*) and DISTANCE (anywhere
from 5-15 yds) are both crucial factors in preparing a wall pass, it is usually
best to set up cones in a triangle at 10-10-10 yds to give both players a frame
of reference.
Remember the ingredients for a real give-go are: Preparation +
Ball to Feet + One touch ball to space + Optimum timing. If any one of these has
not been taught/mastered, it is a mistake to push for the wall pass.
As
with most soccer “plays”, it really has no meaning until a DEFENDER (or even a
cone obstacle) is included.
Modified Game: 2 v 2 plus 2 Neutral Wall Players
(WP)
Field at approx 20 x 10 yds. Small (1 yard) goals at each end (or simply
score by reaching the END LINE with no actual “goals”). WP have only one touch
(strictly!!) and they play “out of bounds” on either side.
Scoring:
- 1 point for
attempting a wall pass
- 5 points for “succeeding”
- 10 points if in addition you
score a “goal” from a recognizable give-go.
Free Scrimmage (6 v 4).
Closure;
try a little sports psychology! Have team close their eyes and visualize (on
“video” themselves involved in creating a perfect give-go). Talk then through it
like a “sports commentator’ but using ONLY key vocabulary such as “45*….ball to
feet….pass and go…play behind in space….1-2…uno-dos!! Etc.
