THEME: FIRST DEFENDER - defending the “Dribbler”
Coaching Tip: So far we have been
developing attributes of the first attacker (dribbling). We can run many of
the same “fun” and “1 vs. 1” scenarios, but now we are concentrating on
correct defending technique.
Coaching Cues: (basic)
A balanced basketball-type stance; force the player away with an angled
stance. Use arms and body to “dictate” the direction of play.
Small sliding steps (like Basketball) but lighter on your feet with smaller
steps
Shift…with your hips
Stay low.
Above all, be patient, do not “bite” against a strong dribbler, but DO exert
clear and balanced PRESSURE.
Coaching Cues (advanced)
Which way have you decided to force the attacker? Why?
Learning to defend with EITHER front foot or back foot, while remaining
BALANCED.
Adjusting distance for a very fast opponent.
Using Fake defensive “jabs” to unsettle the dribbler.
