Tryout Information
The goal of evaluations is to place as many of our players as possible on the right team for their development level. Our D3 and D1 teams play in a very tough league, with lots of travel and against very strong teams, and for their self-esteem, safety and continued enjoyment of the sport, we want our players to be developmentally ready for whichever level they will play. We believe the new evaluation system, developed by esteemed coach Alan Exley, is a very valuable tool for assessing players and gauging their appropriate division. Alan has been working on this evaluation system for a few years now, and has come up with a way to rate players on many of the key skills that are encompassed within well-rounded soccer players. As players continue to train and develop over time, their ratings will change. If your child has been evaluated to be at the D4 level this year, you can use their scores to talk with them about the parts of the evaluation that they did well in, as well as the skills that they can work on in order to improve for seasons to come.
* A score of 2.25 or below is considered to be a D4 level player
*Scores between 2.3 and 3.25 are considered to be D3 players
* Scores of 3.3 or above are considered to be a D1 player.
We will form D1 teams where there are at least 10 to 12 D1-rated players within 2 years (U11 and U12, for example). As we all know, this is a small area with a small pool of players and our league play is against much larger clubs. We have had to make a commitment to the league that we play in that we will send competitive teams. The Competitive Committee is committed to forming D1 teams when we can, and continuing to develop and train our players for competition. If your child is rated as a D1 level player but we are unable to form a D1 team in their age group, or if you are hoping your child can play on a D1 team in the future, here are a few things you can do to help:
-keep supporting their training and love of the game
-encourage and support their peers
-promote good sportsmanship, and comradery within their team and with the parents to sustain the number of players over time AND to help the kids develop as good PEOPLE as well as good athletes
-recruit new families to this wonderful sport!
FOR U16 PLAYERS—because so few players have tried out at this age group, we will not be forming teams YET. We are hoping to continue recruiting, communicating with the JV and varsity coaches at the high schools, and to hold tryouts again in the next couple of months. Please talk to past teammates, and email Erin Mooney at erinlissa1@yahoo.com with ideas for forming these teams for next Fall.
**All players will receive calls from a coach or Competitive Committee member by Monday, March 31st about placement on a team. If the pool of appropriately skilled players in an age group is too large for one team but too small to form two, coaches may hold a few evaluation/practices the week of March 31st –April 6th to finalize their rosters (which does mean that additional cuts will be made at this time). During those practices, in addition to the skill level of players, coaches will be looking for players who demonstrate commitment, sportsmanship and good attitudes, “coachablilty” (i.e. players who listen well and are respectful), and hard work. You can help your child have a better chance of making the final roster by encouraging these qualities.
Thank you to all of our families for participating in our league!! We are working very hard to improve and grow, and to offer our players and families the best soccer experience possible!
